The history of First Parish is intertwined in at least three things - a history of the town of Medfield; a history of our congregation; and a history of our building.
Medfield is lucky to have had an excellent historian in the person of William Tilden - whose "History of the Town of Medfield 1650 - 1886" is a vital record of the founding of the town and its first 200+ years. Medfield is now lucky to have Richard DeSorgher, teacher of history and historian, who has written "History of the Town of Medfield 1887 - 1925." Both books are published by the Medfield Historical Society, and both are available at the Medfield library.
First Parish traces its history back to the beginning of the town. The history of the congregation, then, is a history of the townspeople, of the Massachusetts Bay colony, and of the evolution of religion over the past 350+ years.
We are also very proud of our Meeting House - only the third built on this spot. Built in 1789, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the following articles, you will get a feeling for the history of the congregation and of our building. Enjoy!
If you would like to make a tax-deductable contribution to maintain and preserve our historic building, we would be most grateful. Please make out a check in any amount payable to "First Parish Unitarian Building Fund" and mail to:
